Rector's Note: Love Is the Measure

Dear Saints,

I recently watched “Tick, Tick… Boom!”, about the life of composer and playwright Jonathan Larson. It took me back to some of the songs from his musical, “Rent” (which I now can’t get out of my head!).

One of the songs asks, how do you measure a life? And after going through a few possibilities — like truths learned or bridges burned — it says, how about love? Measure a life in love.

The Apostle Paul makes a similar proposal in our reading from 1st Corinthians this Sunday when he says that love is the measure — the only thing that really counts. He says we can be endlessly gifted and have many accomplishments, but none of these things matter if they are not done with love. Love is what gives them meaning and value. Love is also what gives them lasting significance. For, as Paul says, love never ends.

This Sunday, I am going to preach on how we grow in love. I believe our love has been growing in ways we haven’t even realized and that even more is possible.

One of the greatest gifts of Christian faith is the primacy of love. I look forward to our dwelling on these truths with you and seeing them become more present in our daily lives.
