Rector's Note: Celebrating Pi & Laetare Sunday
Dear Saints,
One of my favorite things about the 1990s TV show Twin Peaks is the way it perfectly captures the simple pleasure of a piece of pie and a cup of coffee. In one memorable scene at the local diner, a character visiting the town takes one bite and says, “This must be where pies go when they die.” A little taste of heaven on earth.
This Sunday we have a rare convergence of holidays and holy days that remind us to take part in such simple pleasures. First of all, it’s Pi Day, celebrated on 3/14 like the mathematical constant 3.14…, and is a day that many people celebrate by eating pie. It’s Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent when worshippers are encouraged to take a break from the rigors of fasting (maybe with pie?). Its name comes from the Latin word “rejoice.” It is also a day of hope with Easter finally within sight. And coincidentally, our gospel passage this Sunday begins with John 3:14.
I can only conclude that the universe wants us to rejoice with a little pie, or whatever gives us a little taste of Easter in these last two weeks of Lent.
