Inspiring Women Art Exhibit at All Saints

Hello Saints, I am so honored to present to you the artist Anne Shams and her collection Portraits of Inspiring Women. Anne's art opening is Sunday, April 7th and you will be blown away by the beauty, presence and strength of her portraits. Please attend and please be sure to invite family and art-loving neighbors and friends, so we can really show our support. Are you curious about her work? Here is an introduction by Anne herself, and you can see the Portraits of Inspiring Women on her website at https://www.anneshams.com/collections/169146

I look forward to seeing you there!

- Paige

Introduction

I am honored to exhibit my Twelve Portraits of Inspiring Women in the Classical Style at All Saints. The spark that lit my inspiration was an April 2017 New Yorker article about Pauli Murray by Kathryn Schultz. The title was, Saint Pauli: She advanced two movements for equality but was at home in neither.

As I read the fascinating article, I learned that in 2012 Pauli Murray was named to Holy Women, Holy Men by the 77th General Convention of the Episcopal Church and thus became an Episcopal saint. It was in 1977, at age 66, that Pauli was ordained the first African American Episcopal priest. This was two years after the “irregular” ordinations of the Philadelphia Eleven. Learning about Pauli’s ordination added her story to my personal history because among the Philadelphia Eleven was my long time mentor, the Rev. Alla Renée Bozarth of Sandy, Oregon.

So began my five year journey to paint Twelve Portraits of Inspiring Women in the Classical Style. From many deserving women, each woman I chose to portray was a very personal choice: women I knew or had known about, women whose work had a profound influence on my life, and women whose work was dear to my heart.

Painting their portraits became a journey of love
